Who Visits Maria Palato?

First and foremost, Maria Palato is a meeting place for anyone who enjoys wine. Lisbon locals and international tour groups mingle and enjoy our friendly, casual space. Maria Palato-Wine Bar has evolved into a gathering place for international visitors as well as a daily stop for our neighbors in Baixa, Chiado and Alfama. A number of languages can be heard here. Acquaintances are made, debates engaged and many, many friendships formed. The owners take pride in welcoming all and making visitors and ex-pats feel as welcome as our neighbors. Our philosophy is to welcome all and treat our customers as guests in our house.

We encourage our guests to bring their well-behaved pets, and you’ll often see Poncha (left), our most dedicated greeter wandering around!

Our Wines

Maria Palato pours elegant wines produced by the smaller vineyards from all over Portugal. From a dry Alentejo to a Ruby Port. These wines, not found elsewhere, will delight and educate.

We’ll help you find the perfect wine to drink in the wine bar and to take home. And of course, the wine flavor can change depending on what you are eating, so we have a wide selection of delicious wine-friendly petiscos that are ever-changing.

Our wine tastings are legendary.

No stuffiness allowed. Occasionally we break out in song.

Our Food

Our food is of course, typically Portuguese, including francesinha, smoked swordfish, sardines, cheese, tosta mista and charcuterie. The menu changes often, taking advantage of the season’s best offerings.

Fresh bakery breads accompany many of our plates. Feijoada á Trasmontana (Portuguese bean and pork stew) as well as borscht make occasional appearances at our tables.

Your Hosts

Rui and Sofia make Maria Palato Wine Bar the star that it is. Charming, genuine, lovely hosts who welcome and care for guests like friends and family.

It is a rare guest who doesn’t engage in conversation with a fellow traveler or neighbor and discover a serendipitous connection that extends and livens the conversation. Cell phones kissing to exchange contact information is a common scene.

Lively debates, introductions, shared experiences, travel tips, home country stories and of course food and wine are all topics of conversation at Maria Palato.

Most important is the fun, good cheer and new friendships.

Absolutely fantastic experience - some of the best customer service we've ever received, great wine recommendations and delicious food (including Franceshina sandwiches). The wonderful staff member even offered us a tasting of the wine from Madeira before we went there which was amazing. Don't let the cute restaurant opening fool you - this place has a great kitchen, huge selection of wine and is amazing! Definitely recommend

What an incredible experience! We tried so many amazing wines, and with our tasting got a charcuterie with delicious cheeses, breads, meats, and olives. My friends and I stopped here before a 1pm lunch, and myself and another friend stayed until past two finishing off with ports and just incredible service. I highly recommend you stop at this gorgeous little store. It wasn’t planned, but one of the best stops of my visit in Lisbon. It didn’t hurt that I could stumble back to my flat after tasting 8+ wines. Incredible service, incredible wine; and what more could you ask for?

Beyond comprehension! Without doubt you get a great experience, guaranteed! The owner is very friendly and likes to engage in a conversation and have a fantastic knowledge regarding the different wines. A niche store with a lot of passion. This is a most, if you’re interested in wine or good food in general!

Party of 4 seated and immediately attended too. Wine, a large cheese and meat board ordered. Terrific cured meats, and cheeses with breads. Francesinha sandwich otherworldly. Raspberry tart to wrap it up and close it down. We will return.

Hands down one of the most hospitable places I’ve ever been. We came across this place late and hungry and not only did they welcome us with open arms, but they treated us as though we were long lost family. They had no reason to dote on us as they did, but they not only had incredible service but also provided us with treats, cultural tidbits, and knowledge about wine that they so eagerly wanted to share. I would go out of my way to come here any time I’m back hands down.
